The black wheelie bins are for general household rubbish that you can't reuse, recycle or compost.
Please make sure all the rubbish is in bags. Do not let your bin overflow as it can make it hard for us to empty.
Items you can put in your black bin
- Nappies - please place in tied bags to protect our collection crew (apply for a discount for reusable nappies)
- Black bags
- Polystyrene
- Tissues and kitchen roll
- Waste produced by domestic pets - e.g. small amounts of cat litter, animal bedding (hay / straw) and faecal matter - please put into tied bags to protect our collection crew
- Broken glass - please wrap in layers of paper or place in a cardboard box to protect our collection crew
- Other household waste that you can't reuse, recycle or compost
Items you cannot put in your black bin
- Batteries and vapes (visit our battery and vape page to find information on safe disposal methods)
- Electrical items (take to the Household Recycling Centre or view other options on our electrical waste page)
- Garden waste (goes in your brown bin)
- Soil (take to the Household Recycling Centre)
- Wood, timber, rubble, bricks, gravel, stone, sand, concrete (counts as hardcore and rubble - take to the Household Recycling Centre, but check rules on DIY waste first)
- Hot ash (let it cool down and then it can go in the black bin)
- Asbestos (visit our asbestos page to find information on safe disposal)
- Paint and paint tins (if they contain paint) (take leftover paint to the Household Recycling Centre where some of it is reused in local community schemes)
- Waste from commercial or business activities (visit our business waste page for information)
