Each home should have bins for general waste and recycling. Homes that aren't flats should have food waste bins. Some residents may sign up for an optional garden waste collection service.

You may need a new bin, a replacement bin, an additional bin or a larger bin. You may also need to order more food bags to line your food caddy.

Orders and requests for household bins

We provide residents with rolls of liners for use in the food waste bin / caddy. Each roll has 40 liners.

Once you've used up your roll, you can request another from us free of charge.

Let us know if you need a new roll by tying a liner or plastic bag to your caddy lid on collection day. Our Collection Crew will then provide you with a new roll when they empty your caddy. They'll remove the liner from your caddy lid to avoid another delivery the following week.

Please consider the environment when using the liners. We estimate that around three liners a week is reasonable and provide them to you free of charge on that basis.

We don't have an unlimited stock of liners so will monitor how many we deliver and where. We will not provide a single household with more than four rolls a year

Alternatives to bin liners

You can place food waste directly into your caddy. If you want to try and keep your caddy clean, you could use one of the following alternatives:

  • Newspaper
  • Plastic bags
  • Paper bags
  • Supermarket-bought food waste bags

We will remove these as part of the waste treatment process.

Missed bin liner deliveries

If you don't receive a roll of liners after tying a liner to your food caddy on collection day, please keep the liner on for a delivery the following week.

If you still don't receive a roll of liners, please email us at recycling@peterborough.gov.uk.

We can replace damaged lids and wheels on the standard 240l / 360l recycling, garden and general waste bins. This service is free of charge.

You will need to order and pay for a replacement bin if:

  • The damage to the bin is more serious than lids and wheels and is not repairable
  • There is any damage to grey food caddies - they are not repairable

How to request lid and wheel repairs

  • Visit our Waste Reporting System
  • Enter your post code and select your address
  • Click 'report a problem with a bin'
  • Let us know if the damage is to the lid or wheels

What happens next

Aragon Direct Services will replace the damaged wheels and lids. They usually do this within the same timescales as bin deliveries (10 working days). You will need to leave the damaged bin in a visible location at the front of your property.

The following information covers how to place an order, the costs of the bins and who is responsible for paying those costs.

We can replace broken lids and wheels on recycling and general waste bins, but not food bins. See the relevant drop down box on this page for information on how to get your bin’s lid or wheels replaced.

How to order new or replacement bins

Please call us on 01733 747474 to place an order. Our phone line is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Costs

We charge a fee to provide new or replacement bins. This is to cover administration and delivery costs. The fee does not cover the sale of the bins to you. The bins remain our property.

View the decision to charge for bins on the Democracy Peterborough website.

  • Black, green or brown 240 litre bin = £31 per bin (£15.50 if in receipt of Council Tax Relief)

  • One 240 litre black general waste bin
  • One 240 litre green recycling bin
  • One small grey food caddy (for indoors)
  • One large grey food caddy (for outside)

Please note garden bins are not included in this set as it’s a subscription service.

If you have moved into a new build home

It is the responsibility of the property developer to pay for and provide household bins for new developments, including multi-occupancy properties and house to flat conversions. You should speak to the property developer in the first instance if your newly built / converted home doesn’t have household bins.

This doesn’t apply to garden waste bins as collection of these is an optional service.

If you are the new occupier of a home

The previous occupants should have left their bins at the property when they moved out. If you move into a home and the bins are not present, you as the new occupier will need to order and pay for a new bin or set of bins.

If your bin has been damaged during collection

If a bin is damaged or falls in the back of the collection vehicle and the fault lies with our collection crew, this will be recorded by the crew and a new bin will be delivered free of charge.

We replace bins free of charge if:

  • Our collection vehicle crushed them
  • They were damaged during collection
  • They fell into the collection vehicle

Bins we will and will not replace

We will not replace bins that are dirty, smelly, still serviceable or potentially repairable.

We will replace your bin and charge you the relevant amount if:

  • It has been damaged or lost due to misuse
  • It has been stolen
  • It is no longer serviceable and poses a health and safety risk to the operatives and / or residents

Split bins

The emptying cycle is repeated hundreds of times during the life of a standard wheeled bin. At some point, the bin will fail and require replacing. This is usually the result of age, overfilling or general wear and tear. It is not damage caused by the crew upon collection.

Therefore, if your wheeled bin splits, you will need to order a new bin and pay the relevant charge. We will not replace split bins for free.

Policy

For further information, read our Recycling and Waste Policy Guide.

Please note the garden waste collection service is optional and chargeable.
