Project overview
The Vine aims to create a thriving hub for residents, businesses and visitors to enjoy dedicated spaces across the city centre.
The project will see refurbishment of the ground floor in Central Library and Goods Shed building in Fletton Quays, a derelict former railway building. There is also potential for the refurbishment of a section of the Peterscourt building, to accommodate start-up businesses and provider maker spaces.
By offering a range of facilities in locations across the city, The Vine aims to:
- Provide an improved, digital focused library service
- Flexible workspace for small businesses and business incubator opportunities
- Food and drinks offering in a new unique food hall
- Education and community space
This replaces the previous plan to use the former TK Maxx building in Bridge Street. We own the Peterscourt building. Detailed designs and surveys for the space are in development. The change of approach to deliver The Vine across two sites was proposed at the Peterborough Towns Fund board meeting on Wednesday 10 May 2023.
The Government provided the city with £13million to deliver the scheme.
The Goods Shed
Cabinet Members have approved the sale of the Goods Shed, a former Victorian Railway Goods Shed and work with developer, Farholt Goods Shed Limited, to transform the disused venue.
The Goods Shed site is a great opportunity to transform a derelict building into a thriving destination for people to enjoy in a part of the city that has seen a major amount of investment.
The Goods Shed building will transform into a thriving destination where people will be able to enjoy food and drink from a host of unique and independent street food vendors in one location, in a large communal space. The Goods Shed will be next to a new pedestrian bridge, known as Cygnet Bridge, which will link people across to The Embankment.
Plans for the building also include a small space for local hospitality businesses.
Central Library
A full refurbishment of the ground floor will take place at the Central Library. This will transform the 1980s building into a light and airy modern library. It will provide and digital library service that will benefit the local community.
Work is currently taking place to scope out how the space will be used. We envisage visitors being able to enjoy a range of activities and services.
