What Pension Credit is
Pension Credit is extra money to help with living costs. It is for people who are over the State Pension age and have low income.
If you get Pension Credit you can also get other help, such as:
- Housing Benefit if you rent the property you live in
- Winter Fuel Payment
- Support for Mortgage Interest if you own the property you live in
- A Council Tax discount
- A free TV licence if you’re aged 75 or over
- Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments, if you get a certain type of Pension Credit
- Help with your heating costs through the Warm Home Discount Scheme
- A discount on the Royal Mail redirection service if you’re moving house
If you are applying for Pension Credit to get the Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help you with your heating costs during the colder months.
You'll get a Winter Fuel Payment this year if you are entitled to Pension Credit at any point between 16 and 22 September 2024.
If you are eligible for Pension Credit but are not receiving it yet, you can make a backdated claim so that you still receive the Winter Fuel payment. The last date you can do this will be 21 December 2024.
View more information on the Winter Fuel Payment on the GOV.UK website.
How much money you can get through Pension Credit
Use the Pension Credit calculator on the GOV.UK website to find out if you are eligible and how much you could get.
Who can claim Pension Credit
You can claim Pension Credit if you are of State Pension age and on a low income. You must live in England, Scotland or Wales to qualify.
Pension Credit is separate from your State Pension. You can get Pension Credit even if you have other income, savings or own your own home.
When you apply for Pension Credit your income is calculated. If you have a partner, your income is calculated together.
If your income is higher, you may still be eligible for Pension Credit if you have a disability, care for someone, or have housing costs.
