Reusable period product scheme

We have teamed up with Mooncup to give you the opportunity to buy one of their menstrual cups at a discounted price of £5. The regular retail price is £23.50.

• Mooncups are supplied on a first-come-first-served basis
• We only have a limited stock of Mooncups allocated to us for the discount scheme - once they're gone, they're gone

• Mooncup will email you the discount code so you can buy a Mooncup for £5 on their website - you shouldn't be charged for postage on this item only

If you buy any other items outside of this scheme from Mooncup, they may charge you full price for those items and their postage.

Other councils in Cambridgeshire are participating in this scheme. If you live in a neighbouring council area within the county, visit your council’s website for more information.

As we are working in partnership with Mooncup, they will provide statistical data only to the councils on the number of residents who have taken up the offer.

About the scheme

We have teamed up with various selected suppliers to offer a 15-20% discount on reusable period products and other related items.

Through this scheme, any Peterborough resident can request a discount code from us.

After we email you the discount code, you can use it with one of the selected suppliers below to purchase reusable period products - e.g. reusable period underwear and reusable pads and pantyliners.

Please note residents must undertake their own research to decide their supplier of choice. We hold no responsibility if you have concerns or complaints with the supplier about their products or delivery etc, so please contact the supplier directly.

How to get the reusable period product discount

You receive the discount in the form of a code. You then use this code on the supplier’s website when making a purchase for reusable period products.

Please note:

• Only the applicant must use the discount code
• The discount code is for personal use of the applicant only
• Only one code per applicant
• This is a one-off discount

Please use our online form to request the discount code. You will need to provide us with your email address.

After you submit your discount code request

Once you have submitted the online form, we will check you are a Peterborough resident.

You will receive confirmation of your discount code within three to five working days.

If you haven’t heard from us within five working days, please email recycling@peterborough.gov.uk.

Please remember you must undertake your own research to decide which supplier you choose to use your discount code with.

In Peterborough, 36,550kg of sanitary product waste is generated per week. This equates to nearly 2,000 tonnes annually in the city.

Most of the single-use period products contain up to 90% plastic and will take hundreds of years to breakdown.

There is also the issue of people flushing period products and wipes down the toilet. This can contribute to blockages in the sewer system called 'fatbergs' where personal hygiene products combine into a large mass. The plastic from these items can spread into our oceans and rivers, harming wildlife.

Switching to reusable products will stop the plastic disposable versions entering household waste and sewers, protecting the environment.

Reusables will remove the need for you to make monthly purchases for pads and tampons.

It will cost you more to buy the reusable period products initially. Once you have them, they should last several years if cared for properly. You will save money in the long run.

We hope the 15-20% discount our scheme offers will help you to buy your first set of reusable period products.

Reusable period products do not contain chemicals and are kinder to your skin, causing less irritation.

• Once you've completed your application we will check your eligibility. Officers may need to contact you to check details as part of your application.
• Residents must undertake their own research to decide their supplier of choice. Peterborough City Council holds no responsibility if complaints or concerns are raised with the supplier directly.
• Access to the discount codes will be possible only on confirmation of an address within Peterborough.
• Applicants will receive an email within five working days confirming the outcome of their application.
• Your email address will not be shared with anyone for any other purpose.
• When you apply for the discount, you have the option to sign up to receive communications from us about reusable period products. Afterwards, if you wish to opt out of receiving these communications, please email us at recycling@peterborough.gov.uk
• If you opt in to receive these communications, we may contact you periodically to ask some details about how you have used the codes and how your experience of using reusable period products has developed. We may also contact you from time to time with further information to support you in using reusable period products.
• Further terms and conditions may be required by the supplier and can be found through the individual websites and the purchasing process. For example, the discount code is single-use and cannot be used in line with other discounts and promotions.
• The retailers participating in this scheme will provide us with statistical data as to how many Peterborough residents have used the discount code on their website - they will not share your personal information with us.
