Important dates for this year’s UK General Election

People in Peterborough will have their say on who represents them as Member of Parliament at the General Election.

In Peterborough, there are two MP seats - Peterborough and North-West Cambridgeshire. These will be counted at Kingsgate Conference Centre on Thursday 4 July 2024. The results will be declared in the early hours of Friday morning.

The deadline for prospective candidates to submit their nomination papers for one of these seats is 4pm tonight (Friday 7 June). The Statement of Persons nominated will then be published on the council’s web page as soon as possible after the deadline on the same date.

To vote in the election, members of the public will need to make sure they have registered to vote. They will also need to apply before the deadline if they intend to vote by post or proxy. The deadlines are:

• Register to vote – The deadline to register is 11.59pm on Tuesday 18 June. It takes just five minutes to apply online.
• Apply for a postal vote – The postal vote deadline is Wednesday 19 June at 5pm. Apply online.
• Apply for a proxy vote – The deadline to apply for a proxy vote (someone to vote on your behalf) is Wednesday 26 June at 5pm. Apply online.
• Apply for Voter ID – You are required by law to prove your identity with photo ID if you are voting in person at a polling station. To see a full list of accepted forms of photo ID, visit the Electoral Commission website. If you don’t have photo ID you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) which will enable you to vote in the polling station. Apply for a VAC on the Government's website by 26 June at 5pm.

Rachel Edwards, Peterborough City Council's Head of Constitutional Services, said: “Time is running out to make sure you can vote in these elections. Elections are an important opportunity for you to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you as your Member of Parliament. If you’re not registered to vote, or miss one of the deadlines, you won’t be able to vote.”
