Flying the flag for Armed Forces Day

20 June 2024

Peterborough will be ‘flying the flag’ next week in recognition of all those who are serving and have served in the Armed Forces.

To mark Armed Forces Day, a special ‘Fly The Flag’ ceremony will take place on Monday June 24 at 10am outside the front of the Town Hall in Bridge Street.

The Mayor of Peterborough Councillor Marco Cereste will lead a short service at the start of Armed Forces week and raise a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flag above the Town Hall.

Armed Forces Day celebrations begin on 24 June when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country.

The event is a chance for communities and organisations to show support for those who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

Cllr Marco Cereste said: “This ‘Flying the Flag’ ceremony is a unique chance to show support and respect to the Armed Forces community. I’m looking forward to celebrating the role our armed forces play and showing my appreciation for our service personnel. If you can attend please come along and show your support too.”

Whilst Peterborough City Council will be only be holding a fly the flag service in commemoration of our Armed Forces this year, planning of celebrations are already underway for a large event to take place in 2025, as well as services for the 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day. Updates will be announced in due course.
