Residents can help shape the future of Peterborough by having their say on the council’s Draft Local Plan over the coming weeks.
At a special meeting of the authority’s cabinet at Sand Martin House today, members agreed that a public consultation on the draft plans will take place from Friday 11 April until Thursday 29 May.
Back in January 2023, the council agreed to prepare a new Local Plan for Peterborough, setting out a vision to support new homes, workspaces, transport, community facilities and other infrastructure, outlining how the city and surrounding villages will grow and change over the next 20 years.
This emerging plan will eventually replace the current Local Plan adopted in July 2019 which is required to be reviewed.
Councillor Nick Thulbourn, Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration, said: “Local Plans are key guides to what can be built where, shaping infrastructure investments and determining future patterns of development. As one of the country's fastest growing cities, we will need a plan which equips our city for future challenges, helping us to grow effectively and develop the local economy.
"Preparing our new Local Plan for Peterborough is a vitally important piece of work and that is why we want to hear from as many people as possible. You can have your say on the Draft Local Plan in a variety of ways and this will only take a few minutes of your time."
Residents will be able to take part in the public consultation via the council’s website www.peterborough.gov.uk, when published in April as well as by attending the following public events:
- Thursday 8 May – Queensgate Shopping Centre, outside the O2 shop 5pm to 7pm.
- Saturday 10 May – Peterborough Museum 10am to 4pm.
- Thursday 15 May – Cathedral Square near Cathedral arch 5pm to 7pm.
Online meetings will also take place and details of these will be announced in due course.
The development of the Draft Local Plan follows a public consultation on an Issues and Options document from the Summer of 2023. A report summarising the comments received was published in November 2023 and has helped to inform the Draft Local Plan.
Publication of the final submission version of the plan is due to take place in November/December 2025, with submission to government scheduled for January/February 2026. An independent examination is planned for summer 2026 and it's hoped the plan will be adopted by the end of 2026.
