Peterborough's first Mini Forests
Following the success of planting our first Tiny Forest at the John Clare Recreation Ground in Gunthorpe, in partnership with environmental charity Earthwatch, we will be planting three further Mini Forests. This initiative will be a collaboration between the council and the local environment charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT).
Between February and March 2025, we run a series of planting events at the three sites:
- Celta Road in Woodston
- David’s Lane in Werrington
- Bradwell Road in Longthorpe
How many trees have been planted in Peterborough?
Over 3,530 trees have been planted across the city during the current planting season. By adding to this number, residents will be increasing local tree-canopy coverage and boosting biodiversity, as well as helping the us with key goal of reducing carbon emissions across the city.
The scheme, which will also involve local school pupils, ties in with our wider aspiration to provide 25 percent canopy cover of trees over the city by 2035. This would mean planting an additional 34,000 trees over the next 10 years.
About Mini Forests
A Mini Forest is a compact forest, typically about the size of a tennis court, blending wildflower meadow and native woodland species to form a rich, overlapping ecosystem. This type of small-scale woodland is based on the Miyawaki forest management method from the 1970s. It has proven to be successful in accelerating forest development without using any chemicals or fertilizers.
Mini Forests are not only great homes for butterflies, birds, bees, and other wildlife, but they also provide a place for local people to connect with and learn about nature.
