Peterborough residents have until the end of October to claim a grant to improve their home efficiency and reduce bills.

The Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 (HUG2) is a government grant scheme, funding energy-saving upgrades for residents who could be impacted by the high cost of energy bills.

The scheme - which closes to new referrals on October 31 - is open to homeowners and private tenants in homes not heated by mains gas, which includes oil, coal, LPG or only electric heating systems.

Households must meet at least one of the following criteria to apply:

  • Have a combined annual income under £36,000 or
  • Be receiving certain income-related means-tested benefits, such as Universal Credit or
  • Be in an eligible Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) area

Landlords with four or fewer properties are also able to apply for HUG2 funding and will be required to contribute at least one third of the cost of the upgrades in addition to any funding provided.

Energy saving measures include:

  • Insulation and ventilation upgrades
  • Upgrading existing heating systems to a low carbon heating system, such as an air source heat pump.
  • Heating controls
  • Solar panels
  • Energy efficient lighting

Should an application be successful the home will be visited by a surveyor to determine which measures would be most beneficial.

Councillor Alison Jones, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “The home-efficiency improvements available via HUG2 make it possible to heat homes for less, meaning residents can reduce their energy bills while reducing their carbon footprint.

“I would urge anyone who has not done so to consider applying for these measures."
